Speaking is often the hardest part of learning German. Many learners know grammar rules, vocabulary lists and sentence structures — but when they need to speak spontaneously, they suddenly feel blocked.

That is exactly why I created this B1 German Speaking Game.

It helps learners practise real conversations in a playful way. Instead of answering boring textbook questions, learners draw a situation card, take a role, react to their partner and complete a small grammar challenge.

The goal is simple: speak more, react faster and use German more naturally.

What is this German speaking game?

This game is designed for B1 German learners who want to practise speaking in a more natural and interactive way.

Each round includes:

  • a situation card

  • two speaking roles

  • a grammar challenge

  • an optional chaos card

  • a 60-second speaking timer

The topics are based on everyday situations, relationships, family life, decisions, funny problems and small debates. This makes the game useful for real communication, not just for grammar practice.

How the game works

The game is very simple.

First, learners draw a situation card. The card gives them a topic, for example a family decision, a weekend conflict or a funny everyday problem.

Then each learner gets a role. One person may be in favour of the idea, while the other person has to disagree or find a better solution.

After that, the grammar challenge adds a small language focus. For example, learners may need to use:

  • weil, deshalb and deswegen

  • the Konjunktiv II

  • the Passiv

  • Relativsätze

  • Modalverben

  • comparisons

  • indirect questions

The chaos cards make the game more spontaneous. A learner may have to speak dramatically, ask five quick questions, disagree politely or speak for 30 seconds without stopping.

This keeps the activity fun, but still focused on useful German.

Why this game is useful for B1 learners

At B1 level, learners should be able to express opinions, explain reasons, react to other people and talk about familiar topics. But many learners still need practice with spontaneous speaking.

This game helps learners practise exactly that.

They learn how to:

  • express opinions clearly

  • agree and disagree politely

  • give reasons and examples

  • react spontaneously

  • use grammar in real speech

  • find compromises

  • speak with more confidence

The grammar is not isolated. It appears inside a real conversation. That makes it easier to remember and more useful for everyday German.

Who can use this game?

This speaking game is especially useful for:

  • B1 German learners

  • online German lessons

  • pair work

  • couples learning German together

  • small conversation groups

  • exam preparation warm-ups

  • learners who want to speak more naturally

It also works well as a warm-up at the beginning of a lesson or as a speaking activity after grammar practice.

Try the interactive game

Use the widget below to draw a speaking card, a grammar challenge and a chaos card.

Take turns speaking. One person starts, the other reacts. Try to use the grammar challenge naturally in your answer.

The most important rule is: don’t give short answers. Explain your opinion, ask questions and keep the conversation going.
